Jack started in the Lumber business when he was in High School & Compton
Jr. College as a part time job, working for Cable Lumber Co. He went on
to UCLA and was a senior when WW11 started on December 7th, 1942. He
enlisted in the Navy in January of 1942 as a yeoman 3rd class. Jack and
Gerry were marrried shorly after that on April 11, 1942. Jack moved on to
Officer training school at Northwestern University and while he was there
our first born Nancy arrived. He was stationed at Notrte Dame training
new officers. Later he picked up a ship on the East Coast, came around
through the Panama Canal and arrived in San Diego just in time to
celebrate V JAY DAY.

After the war Jack was again employed by Mr. Cable. The business was then
known as Alert Lumber Co. We added our first son John about this time.
Later, Jack moved on to Penberthy Lumber, worked in the front office and
later became a salesman, all the while learning the hardwood Lumber
business.

In 1958 Jack became a partner with Skip Cregg and Vince Besinque in Lane
Lumber Co, located on Shelia Street in City of Commerce. In 1961 we added
our second son Kenneth. Later the business need to move and in 1971 they
decided to purchase property on Nelson St. in the City of Industry. Jack
was instrumental in the building of the physical lumber yard and Custom
Mill on that location. Jack served as President of the Internatiional
Hardwood Association in 1983-84. He was also a pioneer in securing Fiji
veneer. He also served as President of the Los Angeles Hardwood
Lumberman's Club in 1973-74.

Around 1988 it was finally decided it was time to retire and he susiness
was sold to Don Moreland and Jery Lapin. During all these years Jack
remained active in the Navy reserve, moving up thru the ranks and retired
for the Navy as Captain Jack!!!
